It's 2019. Did you know that Calculon will be turned into a were-car any day now, if he hasn't already?

Wait, Mastodon supports audio only posts now, right? And you can also subscribe to a Mastodon account through RSS, right? πŸ™‚ Would that be a valid podcast you could add to a podcast client? πŸ€”πŸ˜Š

How to speed up developers:
* Give them one task at a time to focus on
* Avoid context switches
* Cut meetings
* Avoid interruptions

Worst way to screw up your back: Doing something that doesn't actually hurt until _two_ days later. So you spend all the time in between NOT taking it easy, because you think you've gotten away with it.

So, we had a power outage. After the power came back, NONE of my servers came back online.

After much investigated, I discovered why: They're booting 4.4.0-150, when they used to be running 4.4.0-141. Guess what the difference between those two is? The r8168 driver is missing. Because, for some reason, there's no linux-image-extra-4.4.0-xxx-generic past 142, and THAT'S where they kept it.

Can't fucking trust automatic updates. Gods fucking damnit.

Power is out. SCL says 5pm estimated restoration. Yay.

Finding myself rather stunningly depressed and at a loss for available/applicable coping mechanisms.

When you have too many tabs open but it's the 1580s

ok. Almost everything has been transferred off Antares onto the Drobo. The cluster is now using it as the nfs storage. Old backups are syncing now, and once they're done the desktops will start rsyncing to the drobo instead, but they're also going to backblaze, so no big. Need to get cron running on it, so the automatic link processing for plex can get started, but itunes should be ready for it. ... what am I forgetting?

I imagine I'll find out when I shut Antares off...

Javascript is the English of programming languages

- kludged-together clusterfuck
- many decisions were made to keep compatibility with old versions despite that not really making sense
- a whole lot of arcane logic that only makes sense if you really drive into the history of it
- bad to do math in
- basically everyone needs to know it at least a little
- lingua franca because the predominant powers on Earth just so happen to use them

"Hi, what can I do for you?"
"There is a large, but finite, number of syllable combinations."
"Um. Yes?"
"One of those is the name of God."
"If I combine random syllables, I can find the name of God."
"Sir, this is a Starb-"
"Venti Mocha Praline Macchiato."

What _is_ the proper term for the name of a decade? decanym? dekanym? I don't know enough Greek, clearly.

β€œWhen the cat was away, Lamb had been known to remark, the mice started farting about with notions of democratic freedom. Then the cat returned in a tank.”

You realize we only have four months until the β€˜20s? It has just been decided that they will be referred to as the β€œRawring Twenties”. So... get ready to bring back the dinosaurs, I guess.

Exactly how thin-skinned is NYT columnist Bret Stephens? Um.

Among other things.

Fellow men:

1. Grab a pen and paper and write:
β€œI promise not to talk/post/argue about this for at least 72 hours.”

2. Read this piece top to bottom.

3. Again.

4. Keep your promise while letting sink in the fact it’s the tip of a monumental iceberg.

(While I favor the "use the money instead of hoarding it" stance, I'm sick to the teeth of people's failure to understand the basic reality of the situation)

ha ha a game where you have to spend all of bezos's money, how cute and funny and wait, you don't have to figure out how to liquidate it first without it being tied up by hundreds of lawsuits? Then the game is incomplete. I'll wait until it's out of alpha.
